Licensing: who may install electrical wiring
Article 7 of the Skilled Trades Regulation Act (2016 PA 407, MCL 339.5701 and following) says only an individual licensed under it may install electrical wiring, and it sets four levels: electrical contractor, master electrician, journeyman electrician and a registered apprentice. A master needs at least 22 years of age and 12,000 hours of experience over six or more years; a journeyman needs 20 years of age and 8,000 hours over at least four years. An apprentice must register within 30 days of starting work, with no more than three apprentices to each journeyman or master on a jobsite.
The exceptions are narrow. Minor repair work, defined as wiring valued at $100 or less, needs no license, and neither does a homeowner's installation, alteration or repair in a single family home and outbuildings that the homeowner owns and occupies or will occupy. Practicing without a license is a misdemeanor on a first offense, with a fine up to $500 or up to 90 days, or both, and a felony from the third offense. Check any license on the LARA lookup, which lists electricians under Skilled Trades.
Check a licensePermits: who issues them and what is exempt
LARA's electrical permit page says nobody may equip a building with electrical conductors or equipment, or alter, change or add to them, without a permit. Rule R 408.30818 lists what needs none: lamps and equipment plugged into existing receptacles, replacing flush or snap switches, fuses, lamp sockets and receptacles, minor maintenance such as replacing worn cords or tightening connections, and minor repair work. A permit lasts 180 days, work to be hidden must not be concealed until the inspector has seen it, and on completion the installer notifies the inspector. A panel, a service or a new circuit is not on the exempt list, so confirm the permit with your city's electrical office before work starts.
Who issues the permit depends on your address: the state, a county or a city. The LARA Statewide Jurisdiction List says which, and for 82 of the 101 places on this site it shows the city itself as the electrical enforcer, and the rest, whether state, county or no row at all, are covered on their own pages. Fees are local and change each year. Where the state inspects, the application is $75 and a service through 200 A adds $10; in Grand Rapids the application is $52 and the same service $17; in Sterling Heights $55 and $34 to $44; in Troy $75 and $40. Fee schedules for Detroit, Lansing and Livonia were not readable, so none are printed.
Do you need a permit for electrical workThe utility: DTE and Consumers Energy
Most Michigan homes buy electricity from DTE Electric or Consumers Energy, and the two handle upgrades differently. Consumers says an older 60-amp service means a new meter socket and a minimum of 100 amp service, handles upgrades through Form 1483 and its project coordinators, and connects only to a meter that has an inspection sticker. DTE's Modify Service page says upgraded residential connections are installed underground at the customer's expense, with the municipality inspecting first and DTE inspecting the meter box afterward.
After storm damage, the service mast, weatherhead and meter socket are yours rather than the utility's, and Consumers reconnects only once a licensed electrician has checked or repaired them. For a downed line stay 25 feet away and call 911, then DTE at 800-477-4747 or Consumers at 800-477-5050. Statewide, call MISS DIG 811 before any digging: the statute says at least 72 hours, excluding non-business hours, and not more than 14 calendar days ahead.

DTE's home EV charger rebate is income-qualified and prints no dollar amount; Consumers' page says $500 off a Level 2 home charger installation, or up to $1,000 for income-qualified customers, with enrollment in its Nighttime Savers rate. Both say terms and availability can change, and both require a licensed electrician. The state's home energy rebates for new income-qualified applications were listed as temporarily unavailable in the Detroit, Warren, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Kalamazoo districts, and the federal 25C and 25D credits do not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Ann Arbor's A2ZERO program lists a panel upgrade rebate for city residents.

No Michigan electrician's published price sits behind the estimates here: each service page opens with a modeled estimate built from national published ranges and adjusted for Michigan wages. This page shows what electricians are paid and the permit fees we have read.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Electrician wage, Michigan mean | $35.50 an hour | Pay, not price (BLS, May 2025). The median is $36.67, against $30.38 for the U.S. |
| Electrician wage, Detroit-Warren-Dearborn mean | $38.10 an hour | Pay, not price |
| Electrician wage, Grand Rapids-Kentwood mean | $31.86 an hour | Pay, not price |
| State permit application, where LARA inspects | $75 | Fee schedule effective April 1, 2024; cities set their own |
| Service through 200 A permit line, Grand Rapids | $17, plus a $52 application | Effective July 1, 2026 |

Questions about electrical work in Michigan
How much does an electrician charge per hour in Michigan?
Our estimate is $130 to $240 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee, modeled from a national published range and adjusted for Michigan wages. Federal data put the mean wage paid to Michigan electricians at $35.50 an hour in May 2025, which is their pay and says nothing about what a customer is charged. Ask any company what its call-out fee covers before work starts.
Does a Michigan electrician need a license?
Yes: only an individual licensed under Article 7 of the Skilled Trades Regulation Act may install electrical wiring (MCL 339.5731). The exceptions include minor repair work valued at $100 or less and a homeowner's own work in a single family home they own and occupy. Check any license on the LARA lookup.
Which electrical code does Michigan use?
The 2023 National Electrical Code with Michigan amendments, in force since March 12, 2024 under rule R 408.30801. A rule update is open at LARA, but it names no newer edition, so we do not say Michigan has adopted the 2026 code.
Can a homeowner do their own electrical work in Michigan?
In a single family home and outbuildings that you own and occupy or will occupy, yes: MCL 339.5737(3)(g) exempts a homeowner from the license. LARA's permit page treats the homeowner as a permit applicant, so the permit and inspection still apply. Rentals and duplexes fall outside that exemption text.
Does a panel upgrade need a permit in Michigan?
It reads that way, and your city's electrical office is the one to confirm it. The permit is an inference: the exempt list in R 408.30818 names only small jobs, and the enforcing agency must approve service equipment before the load side of the meter is energized. Read the permit guide.
