Holland particulars
Holland's electric service differs from most of the state. The state's utility service-area map shows the Holland Board of Public Works, a municipal utility, at eight of the nine points we checked, with Consumers Energy overlapping it at the ninth. Confirm by address before you assume any utility program applies to you. The Board's EV charger and other rebates are outside what we researched, and the DTE and Consumers programs we track belong to those companies' customers.
Under the Statewide Jurisdiction List, revised Oct 6, 2026, Holland has its own local electrical program, so your permit application goes to the city rather than the state or the county. Ask City Hall which desk handles the electrical application. Housing shapes the work: 63.6 percent of homes were built before 1980, and the median home value is $235,800. For the Grand Rapids-Kentwood metro, which includes Ottawa County, BLS (May 2025) shows electricians at a mean of $31.86 an hour and a median of $29.92.
That is pay, so ask each company what it charges. Jenison is 16.6 miles away and Allendale 16.7. For a second set of eyes on a house, start with electrical inspection.
EV charger in Holland: what to know
Holland Board of Public Works appears at eight of the nine points the map sampled, and Consumers overlaps at one. DTE's and Consumers' rebates belong to their own customers, so a Holland address on the Board's lines should not assume either applies. The Board's own charger program was not researched.
Holland enforces electrical work locally per the state list, so the city issues the permit. The state's $5 charging-station line applies only where the state enforces, so call City Hall for the city's own charger fee. Consumers' EV checklist says an electrician or city government can explain permits, which works as general advice here too. Our installation figure is modeled from national ranges, not collected from Holland or any other Michigan company.
Permits for ev charger in Holland
LARA's pages do not name chargers as permit work.
Many cities run their own building department, so start by asking the City of Holland building department who issues electrical permits.
Charger or panel trouble that cannot wait
- Sparks, smoke, flames or a burning smell from the charger, plug or panel: leave and call 911.
- The plug or outlet is too hot to touch or looks melted.
- Water has reached the charger or panel.
- Slow charging with nothing hot or tripping.
- An app or Wi-Fi fault, or a rebate question.
What to have ready before you call
Try this first: call the utility named on your bill and ask whether it has a charger rebate or an off-peak rate before you pick equipment.
- Photograph the panel label with the cover on and note where the charger would go.
- Ask whether the quote includes the permit and who pulls it.
What ev charger costs
The estimate below is the Michigan-wide one, adjusted for Michigan wages and not for Holland in particular. The same table is on the ev charger page. How we estimate costs. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $1,150 to $3,650 per install | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Michigan electrician wage ratio (1.03) plus a typical permit fee ($97). |
| Electrician wage, Michigan mean | $35.50 an hour | What Michigan electricians are paid (BLS, May 2025), not what you are charged. |
| EV station permit line, state schedule | $5 per station, plus $75 application | Where the state inspects. A permit charge, not the electrician's price. |
| Vehicle charging station permit, Grand Rapids | $21, plus $52 application | Schedule effective July 1, 2026. |
| EV charger permit, Sterling Heights | $33, plus $55 application | 2026-27 chart. |
| EV charging station permit, Westland | $50 each | Form revised 7-1-2026; check with your city. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes one published national range for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's electrician wage ratio to the US (1.03, BLS May 2025) and adds a typical permit fee ($97). The wage and permit rows below are what electricians are paid and what the enforcing agency charges, and neither is a price. We have not collected quotes, and too few Michigan electrical companies publish a price we could count to show a range. Full method.
Questions about ev charger
Can I install an EV charger myself in Michigan?
The law lets an owner-occupant do electrical work in a single family home, but a permit and inspection still apply. Both utility rebates require a licensed electrician, so a do-it-yourself job forfeits them.
Does an EV charger need a permit in Michigan?
Plan on one, and confirm with your city. The state, Grand Rapids and Sterling Heights fee schedules each list an EV charging line.
Is there a rebate for a home EV charger in Michigan?
As of Oct 19, 2026, DTE and Consumers Energy both list one, with caveats. DTE's is income-qualified with no dollar amount printed; Consumers lists $500, or up to $1,000 if income-qualified. Confirm with the utility before you buy.
